Vijaya & Venkat Tata's Thematic Page of Indian Stamps

150th Anniversary of the First War of Independence - 1857

Philately is a mirror of the country; reflecting its history, people, culture, traditions, achievements in fact all its facets. Stamps are a great way of learning. As you browse through the philately of a country, the images over the years as they existed then unfold in the most beautiful and educative form as if it were a time machine. One cannot think of a better way of capturing and exploring the evolution of a nation. Philately is thus as great a teacher as it is a hobby.

Indian Philately pays its glorious tribute to the great Patriots and Rulers, Saints and Philosophers, Statesmen and Politicians, Poets and Writers, Inventions and Discoveries, Artists and Scientists, Doctors and Engineers, Sportsmen  and Industrialists, Explorers and Adventures, and many others who have been the architects of modern India. Its glorious history down the ages is brought alive to us in this miniature form. Seats of Learning and Institutions which have been the nursery of millions who have helped shape this nation find their revered place. The nation pays a lasting and beautiful tribute to the great martial traditions of various units and regiments of the Indian armed forces and paramilitary forces through stamps. The series on Dances, Brides, Tribal dances, Rural women, Masks show the mosaic of cultures that  India is made of. Stamps on Animals, Birds, Flowers, Orchids, Trees, Butterflies, Sea shells, Mountains and Beaches makes us sensitive to the bounty of natural beauty that India is endowed with. Paintings, Aircraft, Railways, Monuments; name it and you will find them through stamps.

To maintain authenticity the text has mostly been taken from the Information Sheets released by the P&T department. These sheets -  which are a collectors item themselves - are a treasure house of information, making philately the most educative hobby. Our gratitude to the many silent contributors to the information sheets for their invaluable effort.

It is my plan to expand the scope of this page beyond just thematic listing. The check lists of stamps including those of native states, a history of Indian Philately and links to other stamp pages are a few other items which I intent to include in due course to make it a more comprehensive home page on Indian Philately.

My gratitude to my uncles Sivaprasad Tata and S.N.Tata. The former for his gift which was my first collection and which set me off on philately and the latter for substantially increasing my collection.
